Style and Motherhood, Part 2: The Pinterest Challenge

Well, hello.

Lately, I’ve felt like I’ve misplaced my identity. To find it, I’m repeating old Costume Parade fashion challenges. In my first few years blogging, breaking fashion rules helped me figure out who I was both inside and outside. I’m hopeful that it’ll work again. (For more details about how I got to this decision, check out Part One of the Style and Motherhood series, here.)

Today, in this second chapter of Style and Motherhood, I’m recreating the post “3 Outfits Inspired by Quirky Things I Found on Pinterest”.

In its original incarnation, this post was a creative vacation. At the time, I was feeling self conscious about both my weight and my writing. I gave myself a break, found three pictures I liked from my Quirky Pinterest Board, made outfits inspired by them, then went to (somewhat) secluded locations with my tripod and attempted to recreate the feeling of the original inspiration. I posted the final photos without defense or explanation. It was a wonderful break. It was wonderful to just create something for fun and then let it go.

Lately, fun feels a bit foreign. Please don’t mistake this as whining. Our lack of fun is our own doing. We’ve taken on an international move while also juggling a toddler, and Christian’s job, and a pandemic. We’ll have lots of fun when we get to London. Right now, it’s less fun and more packing.

We did, however, sneak in a little bit of fun last weekend. We took a break and crossed off number 12 on my Goodbye Seattle Bucket List: Brave the Lines for Donuts at The Flour Box. I’d been perusing my Quirky Pinterest board again, and a pin of Black and White Donuts had been lingering in my mind. Below is the photo, and then the outfit that photo inspired.

The Outfit

So, aside from all the fun, what about the task at hand? I’m recreating these old blog posts in an attempt to locate my new mom-style identity. Did this outfit feel like a winner? Overall, no. I have tried, and tried, and TRIED to make these white jeans work. They do not work. Every time I wear them, I end up feeling dumpy. There is no fun in dumpy. The white jeans will not be coming to London.

This cape, however, can stay. Its bomber-inspired shape feels exactly like who I want to be, sauntering between lighthearted and fancy. The black and white aspect also hummed to me a bit. Lately, I’ve been craving neutral-toned outfits. I suspect for their simplicity. So, that worked, too.

What outfit would you have made with that donut photo as inspiration? Have you found outfit-inspiration from something that’s not clothing related? I’d love to hear about it.
