I'm Playing my Dream Role!

Well, friends, it’s been a minute since I’ve posted here, but the reason behind my absence is quite exciting:

Awhile back, I dedicated a blog post to Joan of Arc. Joan, as written in George Bernard Shaw’s play Saint Joan, is my dream role, and Joan, herself, has inspired me and influenced my wardrobe. (Truly!)

Shortly after writing about Joan, I dedicated a post to my mom to celebrate her birthday. My mom has always supported my love of fashion. She bought me thousands of fashion magazines, brought me to Seattle for school shopping every year, and never said anything about my experimental layering phase. To that end, wearing a rule-breaking outfit in her honor felt too small. If anything, this whole blog is a testament to my mom’s support. So, instead, I followed her advice.

I’ve often mentioned that I’m a terrible self-promoter. My mom’s motto, on the other hand, is, “The worst thing they can say is no!”

So, on that day, I self-promoted. I emailed a theater that I’d worked with often, and pitched that not only they add Saint Joan to their upcoming season, but cast me as Joan. (For good measure, I sent along my Joan of Arc blog post, too.) Then, I nervously rocked back and forth while muttering to myself, “The worst thing they can say is no, the worst thing they can say is no.”

They didn’t say no. THEY SAID YES.

And now, here we are. The show has opened, and I’m playing Joan! Our cast is phenomenal, and our director, Bradetta Vines, could not have been more enthusiastic, caring, dedicated, or patient. I feel incredibly lucky not only to play Joan, but for all of these wonderful people I’ve gotten to share this process with.

Saint Joan runs for two more weeks. If you’re in the Seattle area, I’d be so honored if you could come see us! For showtimes and tickets, click here to visit Secondstory Repertory’s website.

Soon, I’ll be back to regularly-scheduled, fashion-rule breaking here on the blog, but until then, I hope to see you at the theater!
