Stitch Fix Review - August 2019

Today’s Stitch Fix is one of my favorite kind of fixes - a vacation fix!

Christian and I will be celebrating our first anniversary in Italy! I have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to my Italian wardrobe. And, though it’s Quirky Month here at Costume Parade, my fashion vision for this trip isn’t the quirkiest. It leans classic. (Far more classic than my everyday style!) I want to feel like Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday. (Or Audrey Hepburn, generally.)

My usual stylist, Kristin, is on vacation, but her replacement really delivered! Every piece she sent lined up with styles on my Pinterest board. She even nailed the color palette that I was going for!

(Confused about Stitch Fix?

Stitch Fix is a personal stylist subscription box service. How does it work? On their website, you begin by filling out a questionnaire. It covers everything from your size, to style preferences, to preferred colors, patterns and shapes. Then, a stylist chooses 5 items for you, and they're shipped to your front door. You're only charged for what you keep, and the $20 styling fee goes toward whatever you purchase.

Let’s open the box!

ITEM #1 - KATIE STURINO Alessa Wrap Dress

THOUGHTS - This dress runs large. It’s a true wrap dress, so when it I tied it so it’d fit, I had a lump of material bunched on my side. On paper, I thought this dress would be a slam dunk. Once it was on, it felt a bit ho hum.

As I’ve gotten older, I’m less willing to buy clothing that’s just ok, or because I should like it, or because its kinda, sorta, close to what I had in mind, so this is a pass for me. I’d rather hold out for something I feel fabulous in.

VERDICT - Return

ITEM #2 - LE LIS Emmeline Midi Skirt

THOUGHTS - Of all the items in this Fix, I’ve waffled the most about this skirt.

Its shape is just right. Its length is just right.

But… I’m not crazy about the pattern. It doesn’t photograph well, and I’ve too often made the mistake on vacation where I bring items that look odd in pictures and regret it later.

And the biggest but, the lining is polyester. I ask for no polyester in my Fixes. I really hate it. It doesn’t breathe. It’s itchy. I don’t understand why we still wear it. Though I wanted to like this one, it’s not quite right. I’ve got my eye on an all-cotton skirt at And Other Stories.

VERDICT - Return

ITEM #3 - MARKET & SPRUCE Trumer V-Neck Knit Top

THOUGHTS - This shirt is long! (Nick from New Girl’s long shirt, long.)

But kidding around aside - this white T-shirt is quite nice. It’s soft. It drapes nicely when tucked in. If I were waaaaaay taller, I’d consider keeping it. (I also just bought a bunch of white T’s during the Nordstrom Semi-Annual sale…. so I really don’t need anymore.)

VERDICT - Return

ITEM #4 - SANCTUARY Dakotah Button Detail Dress

THOUGHTS - I thought I’d hate this dress. I’ve never been a fan of hi-lo hemlines. I hold practically all of my weight in my bottom half. Hi-lo hemlines have always made me feel self conscious about my legs.

This dress surprised me. It was way more flattering than I bargained for. The bummer, however, is that this dress just barely fit my hips, but the top was voluminous. I tightened the adjustable straps as tight as they’d go, and they still slipped off. And even then, I had a bunch of extra material that my chest didn’t fill out, and the straps were so short my arm pits felt strangled.

I’m really pear shaped. (I should have my own category called “super pear.”) I really wanted this dress to work but, like a lot of dresses, its proportions weren’t made with me in mind.

VERDICT - Return

ITEM #5 - RAILS Leanne Wrap Dress

THOUGHTS - I peeked at my Fix before it arrived, and I was so excited for this dress. I loved the color. I loved the polka dots. I loved the wrap.

But, just like the last dress, this dress barely fit my hips, and was too big on top.

VERDICT - Sadly, return.

While I loved most of this Fix, it didn’t quite love me. It’s back to the drawing board for my vacation wardrobe!
