Stitch Fix Review - June 2019

I think my Stitch Fix Stylist, Kristin, is psychic.

In several instances, I have wanted but haven’t asked for a specific style, regretted it, and then, miraculously, it shows up in my Fix.

This month, when I wrote my stylist note, I was racked with thematic indecision. I was still making long, long, long lists of potential themes. I finally decided that June is Explorer Month, but Kristin didn’t know that.

Yet, it seems that she saw the future or read my mind. In this Fix, she sent me a bunch of rule-breaking pieces. Though I hadn’t told her the theme, I was exploring new territory anyway.

(Confused about Stitch Fix?

Stitch Fix is a personal stylist subscription box service. How does it work? You sign on to their website, fill out a questionnaire regarding your wardrobe wants and needs, a stylist chooses 5 items for you, and they're shipped to your front door. You're only charged for what you keep, and the $20 styling fee goes toward whatever you purchase.

Let’s open the box!

ITEM #1: BAND OF GYPSIES Earla Tie Detail Crop Top

THOUGHTS: I loved this crop top! I love a good moody floral, and I have a rather extensive collection of high-waisted skirts and pants that would pair well with a crop top. This one was a bit long in the shoulder and poofy in the mid-section, so I exchanged it for a smaller size.

VERDICT: Exchanged!

Behold, THE UNIVERSE.

ITEM #2: RD STYLE Keane Cotton Blend Knit Midi Dress

THOUGHTS: I’ll admit that I asked for this - or, at least, I asked for tie dye. This dress is HILARIOUS. I hold my weight right in my midsection, so the tie dye placement made me look both very pregnant, and like a black hole was emerging from my belly button.

I didn’t actually hate the dress. I bet it would be cute on someone with fewer curves, and I appreciated the thickness of the material. But….. look at me. HAHAHAHAHA. I think if I wore this dress publicly I’d get asked repeatedly when I was due, and as a person who isn’t due, that’s not a question I want to field right now.

BROKEN RULE: Never wear anything too revealing or form-fitting.

VERDICT: Returned

ITEM #3: MADEWELL Emmett Short

THOUGHTS: A few months ago, I wore white pants and it was a BIG DEAL. Kristin really upped the ante - not only are these shorts white, but they’re shorts.

I was surprised by how much I liked them, but they were just tight enough that the next size up would be too big, so I returned them.

BROKEN RULE: Pear-shaped women shouldn't draw attention to their wide bottom halves.

VERDICT: Returned

ITEM #4: BOTKIER Elia Suede Espadrille Wedge

THOUGHTS: I have almost-wide feet. They live somewhere on the wide side of average, and these espadrilles were too narrow to house them.

I loved the yellow color, and the height of the wedge was perfect, so I was sad to see them go.

BROKEN RULE: Heels are too much. This is Seattle, after all.

VERDICT: Returned.

ITEM #5: GAL MEETS GLAM COLLECTION Patricia Ruffle Detail Textured Maxi Dress

THOUGHTS: Though I’m late to the party, I’m suddenly enjoying the prairie dress trend. This one, however, wasn’t my cup of tea. It was too big, and I’m not a fan of a ruffle straps.

However, this is the second Gal Meets Glam piece Kristin has sent, and both were great quality and well constructed.

BROKEN RULE: Never wear anything too girlish.

VERDICT: Returned

I’ll be back on Friday with another Explorer-themed post. If you can’t possibly wait that long, I’m posting more exploratory content on Instagram and Twitter, too.

Or, if you’d rather I come to you, sign up for the Costume Parade newsletter, The Rule Breakers Review. Every Sunday, I’ll send you a collection of links inspired by Rule Breakers, plus that week’s blog posts!

Until next time!
