Stitch Fix Review - March 2019

Do you remember that period where the Kardashians started wearing waist trainers? Anyone? (Are they still doing that?)

When I saw that, all I could think of was that scene in the movie Titanic when Rose was getting laced into her corset. The look of agony on Kate Winslet’s face was burned into my memory. When I saw the Kardashians attempting to bring that agony back, I couldn’t help but think WHY ARE WE DOING THIS TO OURSELVES?

For much of Western civilization, women have been hindered by our clothes. From corsets, to endless layers of skirts, to mandatory high heels at work, women have endured major discomfort just to exist in public.

Men, on the other hand, have spent the last hundreds of years in pants and flat, sturdy shoes.

So, because it’s Women’s Month, for this Fix I asked my stylist to send me menswear-inspired pieces. I wanted items steeped in a history of ease of movement. I wanted to feel unencumbered, able to jump around or farm or just sit without worrying about anything popping out.

Let’s get into the fix!

ITEM #1: DVF Cayley Collared Wrap Dress

THOUGHTS: I peeked at this fix before it arrived, and I was so excited by this shirt dress. The colors and the print are right up my alley, and I love a good wrap dress. Upon arrival, I was disappointed. The material is incredibly thin. Sheer thin. Beach coverup thin. Furthermore… is anyone flattered by above-the-elbow length sleeves?

VERDICT: Return

ITEM #2: CENTRAL PARK WEST Grantis Silk Cashmere Turtle Neck Sweater

THOUGHTS: I put this turtleneck on, and immediately wanted to take it off. It was super form fitting, all the hemlines (waist, sleeves and neck) continuously rolled up, and it showed EVERYTHING. I think this top would be super swanky on someone who was incredibly toned, but that’s not me.

VERDICT: Return

ITEM #3: CURRENT/ELLIOTT Perfect Muscle Maxi Dress

THOUGHTS: I thought a muscle maxi dress was a really clever play on menswear, but oof. Being very pear-shaped, I’ve never been able to get a rectangular dress to work. It’s a whole square peg, round hole conundrum. This dress made me super uncomfortable because the material was thin. To get it to hang well (relatively), I ended up wearing high-waisted yoga shorts underneath. That’s not practical, so back it goes.

VERDICT: Return

ITEM #4: LEMON TART Darcie Printed Knit Blazer

THOUGHTS: Kristin, my stylist, suggested pairing this blazer and dress together, and finishing the look with some moto boots. I missed the moto boot suggestion, and it would have helped to complete the look and give it a menswear vibe. I liked the cut of this blazer, but the color and pattern just didn’t sing to me.

VERDICT: Return

ITEM #5: BEACH LUNCH LOUNGE Sentina Button Down Top

THOUGHTS: I loved the lemon print of this top, but it was too tight across the arms and chest. I considered an exchange, but figured I’d save the money for an item I’d get a bit more wear out of. I anticipated that, more often than not, this shirt would feel a bit preppy and I’d pass over it for other options.

VERDICT: Return.

While I didn’t keep anything this time, I’m always intrigued by what my stylist, Kristin, sends. She has really embraced the monthly themes, and interprets each one in a clever way.

What did you think of this Fix? Is there something you think I should have kept? Leave me a comment below, and let’s chat!

I’ll be back on Friday with an extra special post for International Women’s Day!
